Sima Majernikova currently oversees two international programmes run by the Royal Academy of Engineering which support researchers and international development professionals to address fundamental development challenges in an effort to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals. She realised her passion for international development while spending a summer in Nigeria on a volunteering placement. To learn more about the challenges faced by the Global South, she decided to pursue a Master's degree in Development Studies from the University of Cambridge. She is particularly interested in researching issues related to gender equality and the region of Sub-Saharan Africa. While pursuing her graduate degree, she co-founded the Cambridge Central and Eastern European Forum with the goal to raise interest in the CEE region within the university community and beyond and to bring attention to contemporary issues from the region. The flagship event of this initiative is an annual multi-disciplinary conference aiming to open up a more comprehensive discussion of current and historical issues in the CEE countries. During the time of her undergraduate studies in politics and international relations at the University of Kent, she interned at the Slovak Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, the Office of the President of the Slovak Republic and GLOBSEC.
